Evergreen Baptist Church was built in 1844 after a division from old Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, which had been constituted on October 15, 1809, and stood at or near the site of the Centenary Methodist Church. On February 14, 1844, the congregation and pastor were locked out of that church by a Brother Burkhalter. Most of the congregation, regarded as “Mission-minded,” formed a new church, named it Evergreen, and constructed this building in 1844. During slavery days Negroes walked for miles to attend its services, and in 1864 Negro members outnumbered White members, 130 to 86.
