Cannon Mountain Ski Area in Franconia Notch State Park is one of New Hampshire’s largest ski areas, with the state’s greatest vertical drop and its only aerial tram. Its importance reaches beyond recreation into the early history of American lift-served skiing. Skiing on Cannon began on old logging roads by 1929, and interest grew after Alexander Bright, inspired by European tramways, promoted a passenger tram for the mountain. Opened on June 28, 1938, Cannon’s aerial tramway became North America’s first passenger aerial tramway, drew national attention, and helped establish skiing as a viable New Hampshire industry. Cannon remains a major ski mountain with terrain for experts and beginners alike.
