Cannon Mountain, a 4,080-foot peak in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, is notable as a major ski area, a prominent climbing destination, and the former site of the Old Man of the Mountain, which collapsed on May 3, 2003. Once officially called Profile Mountain, it was renamed Cannon Mountain in 1972 after boulders resembling an antique cannon. Its Cannon Cliff, about 1,000 feet high and over a mile long, became an important climbing site by the 1920s. The mountain also holds a central place in North American skiing, with the first racing trail in 1933, the first aerial tramway in 1938, World Cup races in 1967, and a long-running state-owned ski area.
