San Angelo State Park is a 7,677-acre park on O.C. Fisher Reservoir at the edge of San Angelo, opened to the public in 1995 after surrounding land from the reservoir project was leased for park use. The area preserves a long human story, with evidence of Native American occupation stretching back about 18,000 years and later mission activity among the Jumano Indians after European Americans arrived in the early 16th century. Today the park blends reservoir shoreline with West Texas brush country, supports varied wildlife and birdlife, and is distinguished by official state herds of American bison and Texas longhorns alongside extensive trails, camping, boating, fishing, and seasonal hunting.
