Idle Hour Café, opened in 1941 in North Hollywood’s NoHo Arts District, is a rare surviving example of Los Angeles programmatic architecture. Built as a two-story whiskey barrel with Streamline Moderne character, it was created for Universal Studios film technician Michael D. Connolly as a cafe, tap room, and upstairs apartment. After later operating as Rudy’s Keg and then the dinner theater La Caña, the property passed through several owners before being restored by the 1933 Group and reopened under its original name in 2015. Designated Los Angeles Cultural-Historic Monument #977 in 2010, it remains a working bar and restaurant and a preserved piece of Southern California roadside history.
