Sunset Park in the southeast Las Vegas Valley grew from ranch land into one of the region’s major public green spaces. John F. Miller acquired the land from the federal government in 1909 and established Miller Ranch after drilling three wells. After later ownership by J. Kell Houssels and a group of investors, Clark County bought the property in 1967, turning Houssels Ranch into the valley’s third county park and renaming it Sunset Park in 1968. Its fourteen-acre pond supports fish and waterfowl and includes a moai moved from the Stardust Hotel’s Aku Aku Restaurant. Sports fields, courts, trails, fishing, picnicking, and public events have made it a prominent regional destination.
