Forest Glade Cemetery
History
3
When Rollinsford split from Somersworth in 1849, Somersworth had to establish a new public, nonsectarian burial ground. A site near the geographic center of the city was purchased, and Forest Glade Cemetery was established in 1851. Its picturesque setting, Gothic chapel, winding pathways, mature trees, and ornate gravestones and monuments make it a notable example of the rural cemetery movement popularized in the 19th century. As an active cemetery, it contains the graves of residents of all walks of life, ranging from ordinary citizens to prominent industrialists and civic leaders.
