Stoney Slough National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wetland in eastern North Dakota south and west of Valley City. Covering 2,000 acres, it includes land owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and additional acreage protected by easement. Established by executive orders during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration, it was set aside as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Managed today by the Valley City Wetland Management District within the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge Complex, it is defined by permanent and temporary pools, some with managed water levels, and is especially important as a fall stopover for snow geese and white-fronted geese.
