Harlan Hotel was the home of James Harlan from 1857 to 1873. He served as president of Iowa Wesleyan University from 1853 to 1855, as a United States Senator from 1855 to 1865 and again from 1867 to 1872, and as Secretary of the Interior from 1865 to 1866.
