Ashland State Park in Ashland, Massachusetts, is a 470-acre public recreation area built around the 157-acre Ashland Reservoir and its wooded shoreline. The reservoir was completed in 1895 as water-supply infrastructure, and the park was created after it went out of service in 1947, with recreational facilities funded in 1954. Managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, it offers trails for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing, along with boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. Its landscape also reflects a complex history, including National Register recognition for the Ashland Dam and Spillway, years of closure from budget cuts, several drownings, flooding from a 1988 drawdown attempt, and a 2016 helicopter crash without injuries.
