Hopkinton State Park in Hopkinton and Ashland, Massachusetts, occupies the former Hopkinton Reservoir after it ceased serving Greater Boston’s water supply and was converted into a state park in 1947. The park still bears the imprint of that earlier utility landscape, most notably in its historic dam and spillway, which were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Recognized in 2010 as one of Massachusetts’s 1,000 places to visit, the park now supports varied outdoor recreation, including swimming, nonmotorized boating on the reservoir, trail activities in all seasons, picnicking, fishing, and youth instruction in water sports.
