Sandia Cave, in Cibola National Forest near Bernalillo, New Mexico, is an archaeological site in Las Huertas Canyon that became nationally significant through both bold early claims and later scholarly dispute. Discovered in 1936 and excavated in the 1930s and 1940s by Frank Hibben of the University of New Mexico, it was presented as evidence of human use roughly 9,000 to 11,000 years ago, with Folsom and so-called Sandia points and associated animal remains suggesting some of the oldest traces of people in the New World. Later reexamination challenged those interpretations, and by the late 20th century the exceptionally ancient “Sandia Man” culture had largely been discredited, leaving the cave notable chiefly for its role in debates over the peopling of the Americas.
