The Louisville Zoo, formally the Louisville Zoological Gardens, opened in 1969 on 134 acres in Louisville’s Poplar Level area and became the State Zoo of Kentucky. Housing more than 1,200 animals, it developed into one of the city’s leading attractions while combining recreation with education and conservation. Major exhibit areas include Gorilla Forest, Glacier Run, the Islands, Australia, South America, Africa, and the HerpAquarium, with notable features such as award-winning habitats, close animal viewing, and interactive exhibits. The zoo has also gained attention for conservation breeding and unusual animal stories, including rare births, medical milestones, and the care of prominent animals such as Helen and Qannik.
