Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve is a 41-acre protected natural area in Louisville’s Poplar Level neighborhood, created in 1982 from wooded land that had once been part of the Collings estate and later Joe Creason Park. Along Beargrass Creek’s south fork, it is now owned by the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves and managed with help from the Louisville Nature Center. About 2 miles of trails cross wetlands and a ridge top, giving this inner-city preserve unusual landscape variety. Its rich biodiversity, including around 180 plant species, more than 150 bird species, and 30 butterfly species, makes it an important urban refuge for native wildlife.
