Although the son of a Tory, Isaac Wise chose the cause of American independence. In 1776 he was hanged by a band of Tories from a nearby tree. His body was prepared for burial by Simon Haas and interred here, the beginning of this cemetery. Three years later Simon Haas, a pioneer and patriot, died and was buried in the grave on the right, marked by rough stones bearing only the inscription “S H 1779.”
