On 2nd July 1916, Captain Wilfred Spender of the Ulster Division's HQ staff wrote that the Ulster Division had lost more than half the men who attacked and had sacrificed itself for an Empire that had treated them none too well. He said the much derided Ulster Volunteer Force had won a name equal to any in history, that their devotion had no doubt helped the advance elsewhere, and that they deserved the gratitude of the British Empire and fair treatment for their beloved Province. The division's Great War battle honors included the Somme, Ypres 1917, Thiepval, Langemarck, Messines, Passhendaele, Cambrai, Picardy, St. Quentin, Ypres 1918, Arras, and Courtrai.
