Howe Caverns, a limestone cave in Howes Cave, New York, was discovered in 1842 when Lester Howe followed a cool draft near a hillside and began exploring with Henry Wetsel, on whose land the entrance lay. Opened to the public in 1843, it later closed after the entrance passed to a quarry, but reopened in 1929 with elevators, walkways, lighting, and boat tours that shaped the modern visitor experience. The largest show cave in the Northeastern United States, it is also significant for its geology, glacial history, underground river connections to nearby caves, and the reopening of its natural entrance in 2015.
