Cascade Caverns, a limestone solution cave about three miles south of Boerne in the Texas Hill Country, has a long human and natural history. Known to the Lipan Apache before eighteen hundred, it later became Hester's Cave and was informally toured by eighteen seventy-five before opening commercially in nineteen thirty-two. Deeper sections were reached in modern times in nineteen thirty-one, including the Cathedral Room. The cave's seven original interior waterfalls were mostly lost to the nineteen fifties drought, and the last natural fall was sealed in the nineteen sixties after flooding concerns. Still active and rich in wildlife, it is especially notable for a rare salamander found only here and one nearby cave.
