A C-119 "Flying Box Car" crashed 10 miles east of Billings, Montana, on November 18, 1952, while enroute from Great Falls, Montana, to Denver, Colorado, killing nine military men and seriously injuring seven. With the help of residents of Shepherd and Huntley, seven members of the military aboard the flight survived. Those killed were Maj. L.L. Withers, Capt. H. Manning, Capt. Daniel H. Rush, Lt. O.D. Eckstein, Lt. R.W. Johnson, A/1C D.O. Halland, A/2C James F. Harvey, and A/3C Lawrence E. Finch. Those seriously injured were Col. W.E. Shuttles, Maj. J. Severance, Capt. W.R. Richard, S/Sgt J.P. Snow, S/Sgt H. Dillion, R.A.F. Dudley Mills, and R.A.F. John Downs.
