Braxton Bragg, born in Warrenton, N.C., on 22 March 1817 and died in Galveston, Texas, on 27 September 1876, served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the USA and a General in the CSA. War Department General Order No. 77, issued on 21 August 1918, established Camp Bragg, N.C., in his honor, citing Capt. Braxton Bragg's signal service while commanding Battery C, Third Field Artillery, at the battle of Buena Vista, Mexico. Fort Bragg bears the name of a brave, resourceful fighting man, a soldier who saw action in three wars and won distinction in each of them.
