Daniel Boone was born in Pennsylvania in 1734 and died in Missouri in 1820. He married Rebecca Boone in North Carolina in 1756, made his first trip to Kentucky in 1767, and set up Fort Boonesborough in 1775 while surveying the Wilderness Trail. He served as a surveyor, colonist, legislator, and sheriff, was captured by British-aligned Shawnee in 1778, escaped, and defended Boonesborough. He emigrated to Missouri in 1799. In the cemetery stands a monument to Daniel and Rebecca Boone, erected by the Commonwealth in 1860 as a tribute to the family. Their remains were brought back to Kentucky from Missouri and reinterred September 13, 1845. The monument was built by John Haley, and scenes of the Boones lives were added to it in 1862.
