Daniel Boone was born in Pennsylvania in 1734 and died in Missouri in 1820. He married Rebecca Boone in North Carolina in 1756, made his first trip to Kentucky in 1767, and in 1775 established Fort Boonesborough, blazed the Wilderness Trail, and settled there. He was a frontiersman, surveyor, settler, legislator, and sheriff, and he defended the frontier against Indians and the British. His claim to 100,000 acres was lost in 1784, and he emigrated to Missouri in 1799. In the cemetery stands a monument to Daniel and Rebecca Boone, erected by the Commonwealth in 1860. Their remains had been brought back from Missouri and reburied on September 13, 1845, as a tribute to Boone and his wife, who pioneered in carving out a wilderness empire that became Kentucky.
