Kentucky's war memorial honors the state's officers and soldiers who gave their lives in service across many conflicts, including the Indian Wars, Harmar's Defeat, St. Clair's Defeat, Blue Licks, Estill's Defeat, Tippecanoe, the River Raisin, Fort Meigs, the Thames, New Orleans, Monterey, Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Massissinaway, Wayne's Campaign, the Mexican War, and Little Big Horn. It records that the principal battles and campaigns in which Kentucky's sons devoted their lives to their country are inscribed along with the names of officers who fell, while the names of soldiers who died are too numerous to place on any column. By order of the legislature, it also includes Lieut. John J. Crittenden of the 20th U. S. Infantry, a Kentuckian killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876, Lieut. John Gunnell Talbot, Lieut. Hugh Willson McKee, and Master Alfred Foree of the United States Navy, all lost in the performance of duty, and Col. J. J. Hardin of the 1st regt. Illinois Infantry, a son of Kentucky who fell at Buena Vista.
