Olympic National Forest covers 628,115 acres on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, nearly encircling Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountains. Created in 1897 as the Olympic Forest Reserve and renamed in 1907, it later gave rise to Mount Olympus National Monument, whose lands became part of the national park, leaving the forest in its unusual surrounding pattern. Its landscape ranges from temperate rain forest and Hood Canal to mountain country including Mt. Washington. Rich in water and old growth, it includes major destinations such as Quinault Rain Forest and Lake Crescent. It has also become a center of debate over conservation, logging, rivers, and local livelihoods.
