At 609 South Lamar Avenue in Denison, Texas, the two-story frame house where Dwight D. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 became significant as the birthplace of the first president of the United States born in Texas. Its preservation began through local efforts during World War II, when Denison principal Jennie Jackson discovered Eisenhower had not known he was born there and confirmed the house’s identity through his mother, Ida Elizabeth Stover. Jackson helped secure the house for the city, and after Eisenhower’s election the property was restored, opened as a museum, landscaped as a park, and later recognized and managed as a state historic site.
