Dwight Eisenhower, the thirty-fourth President of the United States, was born here on Oct. 14, 1890, the third son of David J. and Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915; in 1943, during World War II, he was appointed Commanding General of Allied Forces in Europe; he served as President of Columbia University from 1948 to 1952; he was President of the U.S. from 1952 to 1960; and he later remained active as an elder statesman.
