Chester Library began in 1928 on land donated by Edith Martin. Logs donated by Red River Lumber Co. were floated down the Feather River, and the building was raised in a few days in 1929 in an old-fashioned barn raising, with the women feeding everyone. Chester held benefits for books and supplies, including a gypsy dance on 8-17-28. Early on, the library also served as a classroom. When it opened in 1929, Mrs. Stover was the first librarian. It is now the only log cabin library in the state, and it has provided countless hours of enjoyment and education to the people of Chester, helping to inspire the imagination of the young and renew that of the old.
