In 1808, the 50th county was formed from parts of Clark and Madison and named for Captain James Estill, a gallant soldier and frontiersman who fought one of the bloodiest Indian battles, Estill's Defeat, on March 22, 1782, in what is now Montgomery County, where he and 7 of his 25 pioneers were killed in violent combat with a band of marauding Wyandots; parts of 5 counties were later taken from Estill.
