The Nelson Buck Massacre
Military
3
In 1869, Nelson Buck was commissioned to conduct surveying in southwest Nebraska while his party was encamped about 1 mile upstream from this site. The party was attacked by Sioux Indians led by Pawnee Killer and Whistler, and in the running battle that followed, all members of the party were killed. Their deaths were remembered in Nebraska as a human sacrifice made in the opening of the western frontier.
