Since the mid-late 1960's, a Pink Elephant has stood at this gas station after the owner brought it there to make the station stand out from others at the intersection. Produced by Sculptured Advertising in Sparta, WI, it belongs to a group of pink elephants that included Pinky, the first produced Pink Elephant, installed in 1963 in front of the Pink Elephant Supper Club in Marquette, IA, and others made for Arco gas stations in the area. This one, often called Pinkie, is the last one left in this area, though a few other elephants survive at car washes, antique malls, and car dealerships in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Tennessee. Over the years, many people have stopped to take photos with it, including tourists who once photographed their children there and later returned with grandchildren. Despite several owners and repeated graffiti, it has remained a loved and cherished roadside attraction and local landmark, and the gas station is known for it, sells Pink Elephant merchandise, and works hard to keep it clean.
