Governor Nelson State Park is a 422-acre Wisconsin state park on the north shore of Lake Mendota near Waunakee in Westport. Named for former governor Gaylord Nelson, it is known for lakeside recreation, open natural areas, and clear views toward the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison. The park is oriented to day use rather than overnight stays, with boating, fishing, picnicking, swimming, hiking, and ski trails. Its inland areas include restored prairie and savanna, while effigy mounds reflect a much longer human history at the site. Part of the property was once Camp Indianola, where Orson Welles spent time as a boy before the camp closed in 1967.
