Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main show court of the U.S. Open in Queens, opened in 1997 as the tournament’s new primary venue on the former site of the United States Pavilion from the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Named for Arthur Ashe, winner of the inaugural 1968 U.S. Open, it seats 23,771, making it the world’s largest tennis stadium. Its scale, later blue-and-green court design, and Hawk-Eye system made it a leading tennis venue, while a lightweight retractable roof completed in 2016 solved chronic rain delays. Beyond tennis, it has also hosted basketball, esports, wrestling, dog shows, and hospital use during the COVID-19 pandemic.
