Encinitas, California, is home to two distinctive boat-shaped houses, the S.S. Encinitas and the S.S. Moonlight, built in 1929 by maritime engineer Miles Minor Kellogg as residences, not seagoing vessels. Created without formal plans, they drew on the town’s ocean setting and reused wood from the Encinitas Hotel and the Moonlight Beach Dance Parlor. Their shiplike design includes portholes, a galley, chart desk, steering wheel, rudders, and a bow that serves as a patio. Long celebrated as local landmarks, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 21, 2019, and remain an important part of Encinitas history.
