San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, California, is a nonprofit botanical garden on 37 acres with more than 5,000 plant species and varieties. Its grounds include 15 regional gardens, 12 demonstration gardens, and North America’s largest public bamboo collection, alongside collections of fuchsias, hibiscus, proteas, cacti, succulents, palms, and Australian shrubs. The site began as Ruth Baird Larabee’s private estate, donated to San Diego County in 1957; the foundation formed in 1961, and the garden opened to the public in March 1970 as Quail Botanic Gardens before taking its current name in 2009. It also supports conservation and horticultural education.
