Cordell Hull's birthplace stands north of the road. He was a member of the General Assembly at 21, later a captain in the war with Spain, then served 24 years in Congress, later as a Senator, and as Secretary of State for 12 years. His efforts in behalf of the United Nations earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. He died in 1955 at age 83 and is buried in Washington’s National Cathedral.
