Channahon State Park in Will County, southwest of Chicago, stands where the DuPage, Des Plaines, and Kankakee rivers meet, a setting reflected in a name meaning “the meeting of the waters.” That confluence has given the area long human importance. Near the junction of the Des Plaines and Kankakee lies the Fisher site, a major archaeological site excavated in the 1930s by George Langford of the University of Chicago. Its mounds and pits revealed repeated building, burial, and rebuilding by different groups over time, with changing burial practices and tools traced through soil layers. The park also forms part of a recreational trail corridor.
