Point Dume is a rocky promontory on the Malibu coast that forms the northern end of Santa Monica Bay and has long served as a prominent natural landmark for coastal navigation. Named in 1793 by George Vancouver for Padre Francisco Dumetz, it kept the misspelled form “Dume” from Vancouver’s map, while later maps showed lingering uncertainty. Once a windblown, treeless chaparral bluff, the area included seasonal whaling activity near Paradise Cove in the mid-1930s and saw growing residential development after World War II. Today its preserve, trails, tidepools, climbing routes, wildlife, and scenic coastline make it both ecologically rich and widely recognized.
