Iowa honored the patriotism and heroism of its sons who fought in Williamson's Brigade, Osterhaus' Division, Fifteenth Army Corps, in the battles at Lookout Mountain on November 24th, 1863, Missionary Ridge on November 25th, 1863, and Ringgold, Georgia, on November 27th, 1863. In the Battle Above the Clouds, Williamson's Brigade assisted in capturing this position and fought on the Union right and front throughout the afternoon and evening, with the 31st Iowa on the right reaching the foot of the palisades. The Iowa units named are the 4th Infantry under Lieut. Col. George Burton, 9th Infantry under Col. D. Carskaddon, 25th Infantry under Col. George A. Stone, 26th Infantry under Col. Milo Smith, 30th Infantry under Lieut. Col. A. Roberts, 31st Infantry under Lieut Col. J.W. Jenkins, and the 1st Battery under Lieut. J. M. Williams, known as "Forty Rounds."
