On Nov. 24, 1863, Col. James A. Williamson's Brigade, the left of Osterhaus' Division in Blair's Corps, supported the batteries on the hills west of the bridges near the mouth of Lookout Creek until Woods' Brigade had crossed farther up the stream and moved down on the flank of the enemy's position. Williamson then crossed with the 26th and 31st Iowa and assisted in capturing a large portion of the Confederate picket force. The 26th Iowa was sent by Gen. Hooker to support the movement along the road over the river bluff, and the 31st Iowa marched directly to the Cravens House and assisted the troops engaged there, where the 9th and 26th Iowa soon joined. The 4th Iowa, with the 13th Illinois of Woods' Brigade, had already arrived at Geary's position after being relieved from supporting the batteries. The 30th Iowa ascended the mountain toward night and at 8 p.m. reported to Gen. Geary and relieved the 28th Pennsylvania on his right near the foot of the palisades, while the 25th Iowa remained with the batteries in Lookout Valley.
