Haywood County was established in 1823 and named in honor of Judge John Haywood, a judge on the Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals from 1816 to 26, and known as "The Father of Tennessee History." Madison County was established in 1821 and named in honor of James Madison, fourth President of the United States.
