Mount Wrightson
Nature
Mount Wrightson, or Ce:wi Duag in O'odham, is the highest peak in the Santa Rita Mountains and the Tucson region, a prominent southern Arizona summit visible far into the surrounding country. Its Indigenous name reflects a long human connection to the landscape, while its later name honors William Wrightson, who was killed in the eighteen sixty-five Battle of Fort Buchanan, linking the mountain to the violence of the Arizona frontier. The mountain is also known for sharp ecological transitions, varied wildlife, popular hiking routes, a memorial to three scouts who died there in nineteen fifty-eight, and forest damage from the two thousand five Florida Fire.
