Mount Hopkins, an 8,553-foot peak in Arizona’s Santa Rita Mountains, rises within Coronado National Forest and along the Mount Wrightson Wilderness. Its name recalls Gilbert Hopkins, killed nearby in the Battle of Fort Buchanan in 1865, tying the mountain to the violence of southern Arizona’s mid-19th century. The peak later became an important center for astronomy. Russell Merle Genet established the Fairborn Observatory there after moving it from Ohio in 1985, and with colleagues developed the world’s first totally automatic robotic observatory. Mount Hopkins also became home to the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory after its high, dark, dry conditions were chosen over light-polluted Cambridge, Massachusetts.
