The Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, just across the Connecticut River from Hanover, New Hampshire, serves the Upper Valley with hands-on learning in natural and physical science, ecology, and technology. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Robert Chaffee and Walter Paine after the Dartmouth College Museum closed, it opened in 1976 in a former bowling alley in Hanover and moved in 1989 to a purpose-built campus in Norwich. Now spanning more than 100 acres, it features over 150 participatory exhibits, live-animal displays, nature trails, and an outdoor Science Park that extends experimentation and environmental education across the landscape.
