Quechee State Park in Quechee, Vermont, centers on Quechee Gorge, one of the state's best-known natural destinations. The land, on U.S. Route 4, is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and leased to the State of Vermont, with a hydroelectric dam at the gorge's north end. Before becoming parkland, the site held the Dewey wool mill, which closed in 1952 and moved to Enfield, New Hampshire; the Army Corps then acquired the property for a regional flood-control plan. The change preserved the gorge for public recreation, including camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, picnicking, wildlife watching, and winter sports.
