Nature
Gile Mountain, a 1,873-foot peak on the Norwich-Sharon border in eastern Vermont, is a popular local destination for its summit fire tower and sweeping views rather than its prominence from below. A short trail from Turnpike Road leads west to the top, where the tower stands beside a former ranger cabin converted to a shelter-like structure. In clear weather, the summit overlooks major peaks in Vermont and New Hampshire, with Dartmouth College visible in the distance. The mountain also holds geological importance as the type locality of the Devonian Gile Mountain Formation, linking it to northeastern Vermont’s bedrock geology.
