George Hack settled in the Sacramento River delta in 1855, seven years before Freeport was established, and became a pioneer farmer of the area. He operated a small dairy and grew a variety of crops on his ranch, including apricots that were once called the best in the state and were an unusual crop for the Freeport area, transported up and down the river from Hack's Landing. The Hack family maintained part of the ranch until 1964, and descendants of George still inhabit the delta. In 1879, Hack built his farmhouse in the Italianate style popular during the Victorian era. Located in the west center of his ranch, the house is the only surviving example of an Italianate rural farmhouse in the Freeport area and remains a reminder of the Delta's farming history. The house was restored in 1992 by the City of Sacramento Golf Division, Department of Community and Visitor Services.
