Everett Covered Bridge is a reconstructed bridge that recalls a common nineteenth-century Ohio scene. Although its original construction date is uncertain, it follows the 1869 Smith Truss design. In the nineteenth century, Ohio led the nation with more than 2,000 covered bridges, beginning with the first built in 1809. Their roofs and sides protected wooden floors that were hard to replace. Their popularity declined in the 1880s as more durable iron bridges appeared. Everett Covered Bridge is the only remaining covered bridge in Summit County. After the great flood of 1913, which closed the Ohio and Erie Canal, the bridge reflected the kind of improvement that made travel within the valley more practical even while the canal carried transportation to and from it. Damage from 1913 was repaired, but a spring storm destroyed the bridge in 1975. School children, local citizens, private organizations, and government agencies worked together to raise money for a historically accurate reconstruction, completed in 1986.
