Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming preserves the major peaks of the Teton Range, much of northern Jackson Hole, and a rich portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Its dramatic landscape includes Grand Teton, Jackson Lake, the upper Snake River, small glaciers, and some of the oldest rocks known in any American national park. Human presence extends back at least 11,000 years, from Paleo-Indian travelers to the eastern Shoshone, followed by trappers, explorers, and settlers. Protection began with the park’s creation in 1929, expanded through Jackson Hole National Monument in 1943 and major additions in 1950. Today it remains important for both biodiversity and outdoor recreation.
