The first grist mill in Wayne Township was built by Loomis and Brown on Pymatuning Creek, south of Underwood Rd., in 1820. Its original mill stones weighed 3540 pounds and were cut from native stone, but they proved too soft and were replaced by French Stone. In 1826, a mile-long mill race was dug to provide additional water power. The last owner-operator was Charles Fobes, and the mill was abandoned in 1902.
