General Thomas Sumter

Thomas Sumter was born August 14, 1734, in Hanover County, Virginia, and was a frontiersman and Indian fighter before coming to South Carolina by 1764 and becoming a planter. As a partisan leader and later brigadier general of state troops, he harried the British in the Revolution. He later served in the U. S. House and Senate and died at South Mount on June 1, 1832.
